Our Story

The original Carey ranch was homesteaded in 1896 and has grown into several different family operations spanning down the Boulder Valley today. Brothers Bo and Justin Carey are the 5th generation to work the family ranching operation, and they are proud to start this secondary business with their wives, Kelly and Brittani. The idea to sell retail/wholesale beef was sparked by interest from friends and family to buy local Montana ranch and family-raised beef. As it turns out, many Montanans prefer to eat beef that is raised and processed in our own Big Sky State, and we now strive to make this common-sense preference a reality.

Bo and Kelly met at Montana State University, where they both graduated with degrees in Natural Resource Rangeland Ecology, a degree that now serves them well and deems them the field and grazing experts on our ranch. Proudly bringing up their children Taylor Jo, Cooper James, and soon-to-arrive Jaxon Gallagher in this ranching lifestyle, their family enjoys daily cow, chicken, duck, cat, and horse chores. Even the little ranchers are extremely fond of the animals in their care! They spend their scarce and well-earned time off camping, horseback riding, hiking, or enjoying other outdoor mountain activities, which is a testament to the roots of Kelly’s upbringing as a guest ranch/outfitting business owners’ daughter. Her parents, owners and operators of Rich’s Montana Guest Ranch in Seeley Lake, MT, were among our very first wholesale customers. If Momma is indoors long, their home is a welcoming haven of warm oven treats as Kelly does what she loves, making sweets for her ‘Rockin’ Heart K Desserts’ baking business, which along with DFB, also offers scheduled pickup services. This ice-cream and beef-loving family values quality time together, which always includes great food!

Justin graduated from Montana Tech with a Metal Fabrication degree, a craft applied to good use in our shop, where he spends the winter months on welding projects that contribute to ranch improvements. Brittani, hailing from the family owned and operated Frenchman Valley Ranch in Saco, MT, graduated from MSU-Northern with a secondary English and art teaching degree. Those content-area interests now allow her to practice her skills as she creates fine art pieces and helps to manage the marketing aspects of DFB while raising their sweet daughter, Genevieve. Justin and Brittani enjoy the seasonal changes inherent to ranch life and feel truly blessed to raise their daughter in a lifestyle that they have always cherished.
